You will probably have to have a router because:

You will need your internet cable to go into the router then a cable to your PC and another for your Xbox.

Wait...let me check into this for you. Since you said before that your college restricts anything but PC IP's...and to save money instead of buying a router

EDIT: Check this out, http://www.xbox.com/en-US/support/connecttolive/xbox/connectionmethods/windowsics.htm

I would rather go with a router, but college's always confuse me with their ways of connecting to XBL. I have a friend who can't connect at all at his college.

alright if you have yoru computer and its connected to your internet and you also have your computer connected to your Xbox you go into Network COnnections and select both those connects once you find out which is which. then right click on them when they are both connected and it should show the option Bridge connections. I ahve doen thsi plenty of times to play on XBC and Xlink Kai

Ah okay, my bad. I definitely thought that I had read somewhere in the past that you were in college and were having troubles that way.
