I hail from sunny, -40 degrees celcius, white as can be Edmonton.
For those who don't know Edmontonians love thier hockey.

The Oilers had one of the most successful hockey dynasties of all time in the 80's, winning cup after cup, and employing the abilities of such greats as, Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier, Jarri Kurri, Paul Coffey, and Grant Fuhr.

That being said, the Oilers, along with many teams in the NHL, are a completely different team now.

We have the lowest average age for our players in the entire league. I can think of four players off the top of my head who are younger than I am, and I'm 20 years old.

Aside from our Stanley Cup run in 05-06, when we lost to the Hurricanes, I've not seen a very strong team.

Where I'm going with this is here.

Daryl Kates, a very wealthy Edmonton business man, has offered to buy the Oilers for
$188000000. Moreover, he's said that should he get the team, he would throw in and additional 100000000 to build a new arena for the team downtown.

This equals two hundred and eighty eight MILLION dollars for a hockey team.

I understand pro sports, and why the hype is there and why people love it. Heck, I love it. But think of where else this money SHOULD be going. We've got players making 5 million over 5 years for example. A million a year? Does a person who gets to have their favorite pastime become their job REALLY deserve 1 million a year? Of course not.

No pro sports team is worth this much money. I am slightly appalled at what the world is coming to, when police officers are underpaid, and when fire fighters risk their lives for a less than fair wage.

What do you think?

Oh, and BTW OcR Hurricane, Oilers > Hurricanes. ;)
Cam Ward is from here.

Agreed. I've never agreed with the amount some of these sports players make, its insane. It's also not just sports, have to look at all the movie actors also, but not gonna get into that... And sadly this world cares more about entertainment over the jobs who save people...

i do agree with you on the fact that players are wayyyyy overpaid and its quite irritating when you hear these contracts come out. hockey contracts are no where as close as baseball, football, and basketball but it still its horrible. greed and money fuels this world we live in

oh yea and who is still #2 in the east????????

the oilers put up a good fight but we did WHAT EVER IT TOOK FOOL!!! :goofy:

i think i sense hunter is going to say something about this^...... :P

Holy another person form Canada!? I guess it was bound to happen with all these new people coming in. Hey Arch your one of two Canadiens involved in this clan, well Nino D Brown is kinda too I guess. Anyway I'm a Leafs fan from Victoria and yeh sports in general way over paid but I'm not going to stop watching it or even going to games every once and a while. And if people keep buying tickets it ain't never going to stop.

valid arguements but you have to remember that entertainment is the one thing even the poorest people will pay for. I sell cable tv and internet and such and ill work in some poor areas and youd think they wouldnt be able to afford it but these people will have there gas and electric shut off before losing thier cable. you have to take this into consideration these teams are only worth this money because they generate that much money. We as the fans are paying them, we pay for the games the tv to watch the games and hey we pay for the products they endorse. Its like any business out there think of yourself as a lawyer for the biggest law firm in that state your going to make more money working there because of the money the business generates its the same thing as the players the sprt generates that much money the players only get paid accordingly. If no one watched they would be getting paid just like anyone else.

Go Leafs!!! Im from Ontario Canada but i live in Michigan now, played hockey my whole life.
