I was wondering if anyone was going to any gym or taking a class for MMA, most recognized as UFC and that type of stuff. I've always had an interest in the sport just because it's the most physical enduring sport, and it's pretty fun knowing that you are capable of kicking *** the right way =). Just a few months ago I picked up shootfighting which is a mix of BJJ, boxing, catch wrestling, kickboxing, muay thai and all that stuff, and when I'm done with school I hope to focus on it more. Any of you guys have any experience, whether you are a cop learning it for protection, or just as a hobby. Heh, I'd like to see if anyone is involved.
Btw, any UFC watchers out here. Go Anderson Silva, HOMEBOY right there.

my parents didnt let me watch wrestling until i was like 10 because they though it was too agressive... look at me now :P
I watch UFC every now and then, usually after a hockey game on VS. watching 50 second fights to me isnt that fun except for the other dude getting the crap beaten out of him.

I trained in Brazilian Ju Jitsu, Muy Tai, and Jeet Kun Do for 8 years. I went to a few open ring matches and was 2-0-1. I never entered any tournies but went with a few buddies,
At the begining levels it is nothing like what you see on TV (thank god). You see alot less punches and more guards. If you want to compete make sure you train 6 days a week and eat double what you eat now. Grapling burns more calories than any other sport so unless you want to fight at light weight you better eat. Shootfughting is an awesome start but dont get to attached to one gym if you want to excel. Once you get experiance take a direct focus on your week areas ie boxing grappling.
I wish i had never stopped training but at 21 I was more interested in beer girls and cards. I think about hitting my old gym up all the time, maybe your intrest will spark me back into things.

Yeah, I noticed that after I posted it Envy =P, then I tried to change the topic name but it wouldn't work.
Shootfighting is a great sport, and I'm really glad I am in it right now. I'm still in high school so school is more of the focus for me, but as soon as I get a little more time on my hands, and have more chances to go to a different gym, (Particularly BJJ) I'm going for that stuff. I definitely do not have the time to practice 6 days a week at this time, but I'm planning to practice, at least more than I am now. In the shootfighting I go, the sparring matches always start with stand up and end up in submission, or on the ground which is inevitable most of the time. I just don't see the point of practicing stand up so much if we aren't going to use it as much.
Btw, what does Jeet Kun Do consist of?

Man that is awesome. How are you with submissions? I remember sparing with some guys who did shoot fighting and there take downs were so nasty. They would get in my grapple range so easy I would get ******. Can you beat on guys your dads age yet? Choking my pops out was always fun.
Jeet Jun Do is Chinese Kick Boxing. It was developed by Bruce Lee through a mix of martial arts(including fencing). Its main focus is how to incorporated your core striength into every strike.
Honestly in MMA you dont really stay in form but taking striking classes is the best way to get used to getting punched. When I was training six days a week I was in high school my schedule was like this.
Monday-Grapple 1 hour
Lift 1 hour
Tuesday-Jeet Kun Do/Mui Tai 1 hour
Wedsday-Same as Monday
Thursday-Same as Tuesday
Friday-Lift 1 hour
Sat-Grapple 2 hours
Sun-Rest and Free day from diet
Really it is no more training than when I played football. But I was in way better shape and after all that training i had a ton more energy. Ah the good ol ephedra days.

I was big into Muai Thai for a few years up until a year ago and still take BJJ classes twice a week just for the fun of it and so when my buddies and I get drunk I can throw them around when they feel like wrestling. But more than anything like BigFish said it is one fo the best workouts around. Jeet Kun Do (Way of the Intercepting Fist) on the other hand is just B.A. wish I had a chance to take it Bruce Lee was the man. Just waiting for your opponents to strike before you attack just seems priceless.

I trained in Gracie Ju Jitsu and kickboxing in highschool at the same gym as Rich Franklin (also my freshman math teacher). Also the deaf guy from TUF trained out of there. In college I got into a little Bondo under the guy who created it. Dude was crazy though and our first 3 weeks were "toughening" which meant getting beaten by 3 people at a time or 1 or 2 with canes. The guy is incredibly MMA smart but kinda f'd in the head.

I payed for a class by Ted Wong Bruce Lees last pupil on hunington beech talk about enlightning. after that I trained with a guy named Ian Savage but he is no Rich Franklin but had an MMA record of 31-2-6.

Yeah I probably wouldn't have gotten into it if I had gone to one of the other high schools and not had Rich as a match teacher. At that point he was still fighting locally so for a few years we got to see his fights at a place called strickers grove. He would always accept these heavier weight fights and destroy guys who looked like offensive lineman. Good times. I actually have been looking into getting back into some form of martial arts. Haven't found anything local that has caught my eye yet. Oh yeah and I'm older now with more aches and pains from sports so I'm not looking to get hardcore in it again. Hopefull I find a nice, chill gym around here somewhere...
