~ ~ ~ ~ A Fistfull of Flags ~ ~ ~ ~
Flag Day - Sunday, June 14th, 2009 - 7pm Eastern
This is a 6v6 CTF based tourney. Each “round” will consist of three Capture The Flag variants against opponents determined by a random drawing. Each game will be for a set 12 minutes (two 6 minute rounds, if it is a single flag variant.) with no limit on number of flag caps. Winners will be determined by total number of flag captures over the course of the three games.
The obvious aim here is to grab flags and the more the better. No sitting on a lead, as you don’t know what is going on in the other matches. Just beating your opponent head to head doesn’t guarantee an advance.

Once teams have completed their first round, the team captains will submit their & their opponent’s scores for each of their three matches to the organizers. The top teams from each round advance to the next series of three games against the other winners. The final match-up will be a single 20 minute game to determine the over all champion of Cirquetacular III.
The customary etiquette about lag should apply. If one team experiences undue lag within the first 3 mins of a game, said team may elect to have all it’s members stand still to signal they want to restart due to lag. If a team-mate drops after the first three minutes, play should continue as normal without a restart. It is the responsibility of that team to re-invite them if possible. Substitutions for dropped players may not be made mid-game. You must finish the game with the same squad you started with.
In order to keep the playing field more level, we ask that no team have more than two members with a skill level of 45 or greater. Clans are welcome to field more than one team, if they so desire.
Specific Maps & Gametypes will be available on an organizer's File Share the day of the tournament.
Team captains please sign up here & send a FR to the Silver Tag "Cirquetacular".

That might be a problem. We will see who RSVPs.

lol. I think that would be considered "cheating the system". ;) We're just trying to ensure that everyone has a good time & no one has to face a team stacked with generals.

Haha all rightttttt. This sounds like a lot of fun. Hopefully we can get this figured out! And just to clear it up I was kidding about the second accounts...I had no intention of cheating :-)

Edit: I was having a bad day and was under the wrong impression about this thing and kinda went crazy... this is what happened... sorry
I see some serious inherent flaws in this type of playing that need to be brought to attention.
First, comparing two teams between two different games is not a fair comparison. It says nothing about the overall skill of the teams. Take golf for example.
Tiger Woods plays Phil Mickelson in match #1, While average Joe plays average Bob in match #2. The overall score difference between Tiger and Phil is going to be very small, since they are both very good players. Yet the score between Joe and Bob could be huge, since they are not such good players. Thus, by choosing the winners of each match we would say that the winner of match #1 and the winner of match #2 would be the best two players, which clearly isn't the case. Even though this is not how the Cirque match will be played, we can easily see how comparing two matches does not determine the best two players (or teams in our case). But, despite both these not being the best two teams, the best team will triumph in the end. The winner of each match advances.
Now let us apply the rules for the Cirque D Geezers match to another hypothetical example. We have team A and team B (who are comprised of all level 50 generals for this example, despite this not being allowed in the tournament) and we also have team C and team D (who are comprised of much lower level players). Any match between team A/B against team C/D will clearly be a blowout. But let us only consider matches between A and B and matches between C and D. The match between A and B will most likely result in very few scores due to the ability of the high levels to adequately defend their own flags. The match between C and D, however may have a much higher number of flag captures due to the lower level player's inability to protect their flag. By the rules of this tournament the two teams with the most flag captures would be C and D who would move on to the next round.
The two best teams have just been eliminated because they they had a close, low scoring game. This game was probably just as hard as any game, and also fostered some great competition but the end result was the elimination of the top two teams. Now we will throw away the Cirque rule of the highest two flag scorers advancing. A beats B and C beats D, so both A and C advance. A will most likely beat C in the final match. Therefore A wins because they are the best team, not because of how many flags they captured. Now the best team, team A has won... and the tournament has produced the best team as the winner.
This gets to my main point, skill is not necessarily directly related to total number of flag captures because the number of captures varies based upon the competition and specific game. You can outscore an opponent by one one game and by ten another, but does that mean you are ten times better the second game? No.
This is perhaps the most important issue. What is the incentive to prevent cheating? By cheating I mean agreeing with the other team to let them steal flags to rack up number of captures. Since the objective is to get the most captures of all the teams in every game, what is stopping two teams from agreeing to rack up the number of captures in order to guarantee both teams advance? The way that people advance in the tournament is inherently flawed, and Cirque D Geezers either needs to rethink how teams advance or present an effective way to prevent this possibility of cheating.

OR, maybe everybody could just show up to have a fun day of playing Halo with other teams from around the Good Game Network who, incidentally by the very fact that they are part of the GGN, don't need to be told not to cheat.

You bring up good points Rowe, no need to apologize.
It really doesn't matter because I don't see us being able to field a team..most of our players are 45+. I disagree with disallowing certain skills to play but it's your tourney CdG.

I'll gladly wait to get my 45 until after this tourney... but I agree level really doesn't have to do all that much with the ability to play as a team. Over at H3WM we hardly ever have more than one or two guys over 45 in a team of 8 and win against full teams of 45-50's routinely
Thanks for the compliment though, but I want to make sure I wasn't too critical

No worries, Rowe. You did bring up decent points & were there any real prizes involved, we would indeed have to re-work things. But, this tourney is just more about having an evening of fun playing some CTF customs with some interesting twists.
