I have always been interested in photography, but have never fulfilled my amusement. I have recently been thinking about actually doing something and getting into it. That means I would like to purchase a camera, and I am looking for suggestions.

I would prefer a really nice camera, that is good for beginners. I am looking for something under $500. I am gonna talk to the rents and see what they think and maybe they will help me out. I know some of you are smart with this stuff (Doom) so any help would be greatly appreciated.

You can get a great camera for under $500 for sure. I'm not too familiar with cameras in that price range, so just do your research and you should be fine.

I would love to spend as little as possible and still get a great camera. I will have to look around.

Pretty much anything above 12 megapixels will do just fine.

there are some point and shoot cameras that are above 10 megapixels for decent prices these days, but if you are looking for a SLR i would check out some stuff from Nikon. i have some friends who are photographers and they use the rebel fine for regular use and stuff

Not necessarily true. Nikon is overpriced IMO.

As Carcass said, you can get the Rebel T2i, but you're going to fork over about $900 for the camera body and kit lens.

Go super indie and fish an old SLR out of an antique shop or your grandparent's basement.

And remember, always have it around your neck no matter how inconvenient it may be, even if you don't plan on taking a single picture.

Hell, don't even load any film in it.

I saw the title and immediately was gonna post, Canon Rebel. That is where it's at especially for that price range. My bro got one a few years back and LOVES it. He does photo journalism and my dad taught photography at a college in Tennessee and they both love rebels..

I'm still attempting myself to get more into photography, but since I'm stuck with the camera I have now (Kodak Z712) at least until I get out of school, I've been working with pictures a bunch on the post-processing side of photography. IE Photoshop. From this experience I've learned that you can still get professional results even from not the best of cameras. So this is good news for beginners like yourself that are looking to start out with your first camera because whatever camera you get (for better or worse), post-processing is the key.

From what I've been reading up on you really want to find a camera that is capable of shooting and storing pics in the Camera RAW format. This type of file format from what I understand saves all the information in the image automatically into different channels which work somewhat like layers if you're not familiar. Long story short, this makes it much easier to tweak different aspects of your photos later in Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop to get really cool effects. It also has the added benefit of possibly being able to recover image information that initially might have been drowned out from say overexposure. This is much harder when trying to work with a simple flat JPEG.

So yea, make sure it can shoot RAW if you really want to get professional looking images without the professional cost of a high-end camera.

Hope that helped.
