Intel i5 750
Radeon 5850
2x2gb
Decent asus or gigabyte mb

Like $550cad no idea about usd. Obviously price goes up if you need new hdd or case or monitor but that CPU and gpu are super solid and cheap

Where the heck can you get all of that for $550? The Radeon 5850 alone would be $300 and the i5 750 is $200. There's $500 right there without a motherboard ($150) or RAM ($100).

If all you're going to want to do is run Counter-Strike and other lower end games, I can see what I can do but I need a set budget.

Total will be around $607.

I realize this goes well over budget, but if you can save up that much more, you will get a more than adequate rig for your uses with the ability to have staying power (and we all know that's important *wink wink*). Sucks that you live in CA where NewEgg charges tax. What really cramped my style was having to get Win 7. I keep forgetting not everyone has copies of this laying around. :P

However, if you cannot make this, I'll have to do some serious revising. The GPU is already at a low end but more than enough to run Counter Strike and other Source Engine based games.

By the way, you wouldn't happen to have a Fry's or Microcenter near you? They usually run some crazy good deals that you can get parts for cheap. From a friend: "For Fry's combo deals, if you want to know ASAP what deals there are and what to go in on, the LA Times website usually puts up their Fry's ads online around 2 to 3AM on Friday. Their stores open around 8AM. So that's 4-5 hours of sleep and then you can swoop in on a good Fry's combo deal."

Also, do you know how to build a PC? It's not necessarily difficult but you should at least know your way around one before I could recommend building on your own. Hate for you to lose money on a part that you accidentally broke, etc.

MICROCENTER FTW! serously I got a pc that was under 500 bucks for everything but the OS but i had one of them "lying" around... serously if shipping is gonna kick you that hard for everything (and it will) then microcenter is the best place to go but fry's is second hands down to anything else other than newegg.

my pc isnt the fastest or best around but it is way better than anything that you buy off the shelf for 700$ or under, and it holds its own in most any games the only thing i need to upgrade anytime soon would be mobo, and cpu

Check those deals and see if you find anything like the parts I described. I wouldn't buy just anything as sometimes I'm sure there are crap parts in those deals they're trying to get rid of, but you may be able to save some cash.
