Diablo III Beta Announced for Q3 2011


Blizzard's Michael Morhaime revealed in Activision's most recent investors conference call that the developer has started internal testing for Diablo 3 somewhere last week, but more importantly also stated that external beta testing is scheduled to begin in Q3 2011, and while there is no official release date yet, Blizzard is pushing hard to get the game ready before end of the year.

Diablo III is being developed as the definitive action role-playing game, and a true continuation of the Diablo series. Players will create a hero from one of five distinct classes, such as barbarian or witch doctor, each equipped with an array of spells and abilities. As these heroes adventure through rich and varied settings, unraveling an epic storyline and engaging in combat with hordes of monsters and challenging bosses, they’ll grow in experience and ability and acquire items of incredible power.

The game takes place on Sanctuary, a world of dark fantasy. Unbeknownst to most of its inhabitants, Sanctuary was saved some twenty years ago from the demonic forces of the underworld by a few brave and powerful heroes. Most of those warriors who directly faced Hell’s armies -- and were fortunate enough to survive -- went mad from their experiences. And most of the others have buried their haunted memories and pushed the horrors from their thoughts. In Diablo III, players will return to Sanctuary to confront evil in its many forms once again.

Diablo III will pick up the story twenty years after the events of Diablo II. Mephisto, Diablo, and Baal have been defeated, but the Worldstone, which once shielded the inhabitants of the world of Sanctuary from the forces of both the High Heavens and the Burning Hells, has been destroyed, and evil once again stirs in Tristram. Playing as a hero from one of five distinct character classes, players will acquire powerful items, spells, and abilities as they explore new and familiar areas of Sanctuary and battle hordes of demons to safeguard the world from the horrors that have arisen.

man i remember being around 8 years old on windows 95' and my dad trying to teach me how to play the game and i got killed by the first zombie i ran into but i was a mage to begin with so no defense... my dad and i played together on diablo 2 when it came out. needless to say that I have waited for diablo 3 since the first time killing baal.

I have been waiting for at least some decent news on this game for a few years now. it has been a while since I have picked up diablo 2 and played through but it still by far one of the best games I have played. I can't wait for some diablo 3 action.

I hope they open the beta to the public and release some codes.

Has anyone been giving some thought on the choice of playable character classes? Which you would potentially start out with and why? Or which ones you may just avoid?

Given that a few are similar archetypes to those previously seen in Diablo titles, I was thinking I may start out by trying the Demon Hunter as my first character. I never played too many assassins back in Diablo II: LOD and bow zons were decent to have. Figure a combination of the two with some interesting skills in the mix would make for a good play through.

Yea that is true, sorcs have always been fun. But my favourite character class has always been the paladin which I kind of wished they kept. The monk is the next best thing but I just feel the need to try the demon hunter...

Also, I am currently downloading Diablo II from the client manager on battle.net so I can play some D2.

How do the followers differ from the hirelings we saw in Diablo II?

In Diablo II, the hirelings were fairly generic, but the followers are specific characters with their own storylines, their own personalities, and their own place within the world. Overall, the followers are also more customizable; you can itemize them and choose from a variety of skills to augment your playstyle.This will be awesome to be able to customize your follower and set their skills such that they perfectly compliment your own character's skill set.

The first two acts are the boring ones... It gets better from there. I made a new account and will be playing some D2 mutliplayer for a while just to get back into the franchise. Just wish Diablo III would come out sooner.

The only time I used a merc was if it was for a specific boost to my character such as a level 2 defensive merc with defiance aura and an insight equipped to give the meditation aura. Boosts my defense and replenishes mana at a great rate.

I saw this when I woke up, and read the entire post including the interviews and FAQs. I read a lot of good things so far and I am definitely still anticipating this release. Anyone too lazy to either go to Moose's link or actually read it, below is the "tldr version"


TLDR Version



D1 Warrior (the Dark Wanderer) was retconned, he is now King Leoric's eldest son.
Fire reigns from the sky, dead arise from graves, bring heroes to Tristram.
Book of Cain fills the 20-year gap between LoD and D3.
Leah is Adria's daughter and Cain's adopted niece.
6 active skills instead of 7. Traits revamped into "passive skills," only 3 active at a time.
Each class has ~20 skills and ~15 passives.
Cauldron of Jordan: Allows you to sell items from battle.
Nephalem Cube: Salvages items.
Stone of Recall: D3's version of a hearthstone.
Stash is huge! Larger than LoD's and has 5 pages, that you can purchase for gold.
DH has 2 separate resources, Hatred and Discipline, both regenerate at a certain rate.
Beta will only be a portion of Act 1 and will be relatively small.
Real money auction house as well as a gold auction house and direct trading.
Banner system to represent each person individually.
Character naming system is exactly like SC2's. Name#XXX.
Willpower is removed.



The auction house should be an awesome addition but so many people were commenting and just bitching about the AH... trying to say that it ruins the game because they are worried about PVP and people "buying" power. And yet the interviews demonstrates that Blizzard is focusing heavily on the PVE aspect so who cares if someone wastes their money on gear to be awesome at PVP, it doesn't really matter.

I still thinking I will roll a demon hunter for my first character and then try the rest after my first play through.

ok listen im gonna blow your mind here.... you left click to walk right.... ok click and hold it and move it around the screen... your character keeps walking towards it... ok and you cast spells with the right mouse button right.... click and hold it.... it fires bone spear at full auto...
last pro tip for necro's. Trang's set although gives a bonus 20% cast rate it is slower than having an incomplete set simply because the cast animation in full trang's "transformed" is slower than the normal character skin cast rate... also Summoner necro's are better... a lot more boring and harder beginning and middle game... but end game they destroy.

also I listened to a looooong podcast (1:15 long) that talked about diablo 3 what they have seen as gamers in closed beta and a confrence call with the stock owners stating they are still planing on an open beta (this second to september 30th) and a "aiming" for full release of the game 4th quarter this year. Diablo III has yet to be released and yet it has won Best PC Game from Gamescon! Also there is an announcement that unlike Diablo II, the adventure will not be over with Hell difficulty. There is an announcement for an Inferno difficulty that will ultimately be a huge challenge for players. The maximum level for characters is 60 and all monsters in Inferno will be level 61, whereas Diablo II pitted max level characters (99) against monsters that were no higher than level 85.

Thanks, I am quite glad to nearly be done. It has been a long 5 years and seeing as I want to do my graduate school, it is merely going to be one step closer to being completely done.

The beta was a lot of fun. I was glad with what I saw of Diablo III so far. The gameplay is just as great as ever. I played through with the demon hunter and it was great. I have not been on in a month or so, so I am sure that things have changed since I last visited the beta.

Also they are confirming the Collectors edition and have said that the arena mode PvP is going to be scrapped from game release and be part of the first patch. I believe a full release date is going to come within the next 2 weeks.

So, correct me if I'm misreading this but this effectively makes boss runs so much worth while if you play them in order without switching skills? So mephisto or cow level runs of the past could be worth so much more if you run it straight through then?

Depending on if they allow it to stack based on how many champs/rares you kill, and the duration in which the buff lasts will play a part. But if all works out, it would be very effective if you just ran through as many champs/rares and bosses that you can without switching skills or leaving a game.

I also wonder if they are going to make it scale up or down depending on if you are running through Hell or if you want to brave Inferno difficulty. It would be awesome to get the buff and do some Inferno runs to try and get some of the epics items.

I took a day off to play this game and going to a friends house for it. I havent seen him in like 4 years and his dad, him, and I played diablo 2 for like 3 years together (not counting the other 3 years i played lol). So Im very excited to play it and I guess his dad wants us up at 3 am to start playing. Making a Barb my first character but will be playing them all.

Although I won't be getting this right away, I am really looking forward to playing this game. I haven't come to a full decision on which character I will make first, but it will either be the Monk or the old fallback, the Barbarian. The monk sounds like a lot of fun, but maybe it'll be best if I just start things out with the walking tank until I get the game figured out.

D3 is finally out (well it is here in the EU :D), i played it a bit to get settings running smooth and to make sure its working and not nuked like the asian servers were at launch.
I'm still waiting for NA servers to kick in so I'm going to grab a few hrs sleep, and then start a new character on NA.
