I currently have TB x11s which work fine but I would like surround sound, better comfort and sound quality.

I am looking to get a new headset and I have run into a dilemma. I cannot decide between Astro's a40 headset or SteelSeries' Siberia v2 headset. To my knowledge, whichever one I choose, I will need a mixamp in which case I would go with the Astro Mixamp Pro. This is sold separately for $129. I can get the Siberia v2 headset for ~$70 or I could go with the Astro a40 package which includes the mixamp and the headset for $250.

I know Astro has been more popular in the past but a lot of gamers are moving to the SteelSeries headsets. Do any of you have either of them or have recommendations?

Why not skip the mixamp and get the TB DX11s? Or for wireless, X40?

Mainly for the sake of comfort and sound quality. I have x11s now and while they are ok for short amounts of time, after an hour or two or more, my ears start to hurt from the foam pads and the way it presses up against my head. The DX11's have the TB DSS2 included but the astro mixamp is much better for only a little bit more money.

Wireless is not really an issue, but I was trying to avoid it so that I wouldn't have to change batteries. I play on a 23" monitor so I'm very close to my setup and have good wire management. I also prefer wired everything (controller, internet connection, headset).

I've never used any of the steel series headsets, but quite a few of my friends have them and are very happy with them. I personally own A40's and they are a great headset, extremely durable and comfortable. I don't think you can really go wrong either way, if money is more of a concern I would maybe go with the steel series, but the Astro's are great as well.

I agree word for word with West.

From what I hear the Siberias are neck and neck with the A40s. Just depends on whether you want to save money or not. I personally don't like the look of the Siberias, but steel series is good stuff. The A40s are also a bit overpriced IMO.

Here's another option if you already have a good headset and mic for your pc.

I used that for a while with my AKGs and later my Denons with a desktop mic.

So good.

The general consensus was that it was mostly preference between the two. I decided on the v2's with the astro mixamp. I'll let you guys know how it goes when it comes in. Thanks everyone for the input.

I've had my Siberias for a few days now and just got my mixamp in the mail today. The astro mixamp makes all the difference in everything and the virtual 5.1 sounds amazing. Even though there are more cords than my TB headset, my area is cleaner. Instead of being everywhere, the cords are near me or behind my desk. My only issue with the whole setup is that I can't hear myself calling out so my gf gets pissed off when I yell into the mic. Oh well.

I used to have an original pair of Siberia's back when steelseries was Icemat so I'm not sure if they've resolved this issue but they fall apart extremely easily. I remember the cables that hold the headband were constantly popping out, to the point where it eventually cracked the side.

Siberia is cold and miserable. Wouldnt want to name a product off that, its just basic marketing.

I have A40s and like them. They've served me well, but are a few years old and getting pretty worn out. My cats/dogs love the cables... they're quite chewed. I'm waiting for the Tritton Warhead to come out so I can have 100% wireless (not even a cable to controller).

I would wait a bit for some reviews before you get the warheads. They look to be the same design as the detonators and primers which aren't comfortable at all.

Not into the Trittons at all. I've tried some 720s and didn't like them at all. I'm also not a fan of wireless stuff. I have heard a lot of people getting hyped about the warheads, but I don't see why. On paper, they sound nice with all of those features, but at the end of the day, they are still trittons.

I'm loving the bass on the siberias though. That's about the only difference I can tell between them and the a40s. Sound quality and separation of highs mids and lows is about the same except for the bass which steelseries pumped up in the siberia v2. I played for a long time today and could barely even notice them on my head since they are so light. I'm very happy with the comfort and sound quality especially for how cheap I got them.

I use a Turtle beach X11...Honestly I've never even heard of Steelseries. But I myself am looking for a new headset where I don't constantly have to untangle my X11 cord from my wired controller, which always seems to happen to me.

I can't say I'm a fan of Trittons... my headset progression on consoles has been Turtle Beach --> Tritton --> Astro. However, I need something 100% wireless. Is there anything else out there other than the Warhead that can do that?

this (http://www.astrogaming.com/blog/1821/astro-gaming-announces-fully-wireless-a50-wireless-system/) might work for you. It's way more expensive though. I'm sure there are PC headset options as well that you can use with the astro wireless mixamp but I haven't researched it all since I was looking at wired systems.

I got excited when I saw those announced, but they still require an XBL chat cable to be tied from the headset to the controller. That's my Chihuahua's favorite cable, because it dangles down (I tend to game leaning forward with elbows on knees). I buy those in a heartbeat though... would even be willing to pay more. I love my Astros, but cables aren't working with 5 pets. :)

I have had my astros for a couple of years now and have loved every minute. Quality wise it sounds like both are quite equal. I'm not familiar with the SteelSeries but the customer support I have dealt with whenever something goes wrong with my Astros is top notched. I have had replacement parts overnighted for me and no extra cost and they often release upgrade packs for cheap if you already own a set of astros. This year it was a new set of earpieces and a couple new cords.
